Keeping your new hot tub clean doesn't have to be a chore
It's easy if you follow a few basic steps
Sanitize
The most popular way to sanitize hot tub water is with chlorine or a bromine-based chemical, usually in a slow dissolving tablet form. There are several alternative sanitizing agents, such as ozone, silver ions, copper ions and enzymes but they must be used with caution as most are not effective without additional chlorine or bromine agents.
New water treatment technology based on salt water electrolysis has made sanitizing hot tub water even easier. Available as an option on all Arctic Brand hot tubs is the Onzen Salt Water Treatment System, which dramatically reduces the amount of chemicals and time needed to maintain a clean, sanitized hot tub. Talk to your Apollo Spas dealer to see if an Onzen system will work in your hot tub.
Balance
The next step is to 'balance' the water. This refers to the acidity of the water and is important because the clarity and effectiveness of the sanitizing agents depend on the acidity (pH balance) of the water. pH balance is maintained by occasionally adding small amounts of acid or base to the water, usually in granular form.
Measuring the sanitizer and acid levels is quick and easy, usually with a litmus-style test strip that changes color when dipped in the hot tub water.
Filter
The next step is to filter the water. Most hot tubs have automatic, built-in filtration systems with replaceable filter cartridges. However, the filter cartridges must be cleaned or replaced regularly for the water to be filtered adequately. We recommend a depth style cartridge such as the Silver Sentinel, rather than a pleated style filter that requires frequent cleaning.
Change the water
Lastly, over months of hot tub enjoyment, dissolved particles do begin to build up in the water, even with the best filters and cleaning systems and the most vigilant hot tub maintenance. These particles need to be removed or they will prevent the sanitizing agents from properly doing their job. Usually, people replace all of the water in their spa every 3 to 4 months, but it is just as effective to do smaller, more frequent water changes. There are easy to use test strips available to measure the dissolved particle levels in your hot tub water.
